The First Amendment

First Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

  1. When the first amendment was written. It stated that Congress should make no law respecting an establishment of religion. This statement has, in my opinion, been abused in order to extend the first amendment on this issue, beyond that which the authors had intended. It was meant to avoid having a government that endorsed certain specific religions over others. However, some people have used this one statement as a means to violate the other part of the amendment that clearly states that the government shall not pass a law prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Why should congress be given the authority to recognize only certain parts of our rights and ignore others?
  2. In most instances where people's rights, to "freely exercise their rights to practice their religion" have been infringed upon, the most common reason given has been because it offends someone else who does not share their religious beliefs. However, the fact that someone may be offended by witnessing someone peacefully, and privately practicing their religion amongst themselves, does not diminish or remove that fact that that person is exercising a clearly described right. The simple fact that someone is offended by it does not remove that right. Secondly, there is no amendment anywhere within the constitution that states that anyone has the right to NOT be offended. By the very nature of the first amendment, we are guaranteed that everyone and anyone will at some point be offended by something.
  3. For some reason religion, and the right to practice ones religion freely, has repeatedly been made an exception when it comes to protecting the rights that apply to them. Congress and the judicial system choose to selectively uphold certain amendments and parts thereof, and not others. Likewise, They seem to selectively choose individuals and organizations, such as religion, for which they feel, should or should not be protected by the constitution. This very practice of selectively recognizing peoples rights is, in my view, discrimination and in itself "unconstitutional".
  4. I do not believe that when the authors of our constitution elaborated the rights of the people with the amendments, that they ever intended for the first amendment to be abused to the extent, which it has. I am confident that first and foremost their primary concerns were to protect the individuals right to practice their religion, and not to foster such hostile attitudes towards those who practice their religion. I'm sure if the original authors were to witness the way the first amendment has been perverted and used in the way that it has in order to strip people of some of their fundamental rights, they would be appalled.

The Americans

Topic: "The Americans"
The United States dollar took another pounding on German, French and British exchanges this morning, hitting the lowest point ever known in West Germany. It has declined there by 41% since 1971 and this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least-appreciated people in all the world.

As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtse. Well, Who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did, that's who.

They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Mississippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. And I was there. I saw that.

When distant cities are hit by earthquakes, it is the United States that hurries into help... Managua Nicaragua is one of the most recent examples. So far this spring, 59 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped.

The Marshall Plan... the Truman Policy... all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. And now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans.

I'd like to see one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplanes.

Come on... let's hear it! Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tristar or the Douglas 10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or a woman on the moon?

You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times ... and safely home again. You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even the draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are right here on our streets in Toronto, most of them... unless they are breaking Canadian laws... are getting American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend here.

When the Americans get out of this bind... as they will... who could blame them if they said 'the hell with the rest of the world'. Let someone else buy the bonds, let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design foreign buildings that won't shake apart in earthquakes.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both of them are still broke. I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble.

Can you name to me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone and I am one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their noses at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.

I hope Canada is not one of these. But there are many smug, self-righteous Canadians. And finally, the American Red Cross was told at its 48th Annual meeting in New Orleans this morning that it was broke.

This year's disasters... with the year less than half-over... has taken it all and nobody... but nobody... has helped.

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT

Blog Entry
Sep 24, '06 6:13 PM
for everyone

Will we still be the country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice??????

Think about it.
All I have to say is when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.
This says it all!
This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please!
IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT.
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.
I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there
are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.
We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.
Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!
"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.
If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you
should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE

Dennis Miller on Illegal Immigration

Funnyman Dennis Miller Returns to FNC!

Friday, September 22, 2006

Dennis Miller

This is a partial transcript from "Hannity & Colmes," September 21, 2006, that has been edited for clarity.

SEAN HANNITY, CO-HOST: Finally tonight, here's our old friend, Dennis Miller, with some real free speech.

DENNIS MILLER, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: Hey, folks. Nice to be back.

Tonight I want to talk to you about the elephant-sized piƱata in the room, illegal immigration. Now I don't have anything against Mexican people, but for God's sakes, sign the guest book on the way in.

Come on. If you're going to knock off a nooner with a co-worker at a bad motel you have to scrawl your worn Hancock on the desk blotter. Of course, you should sign in at the border.

Protecting our borders is not a racist act, and anybody who tells you that it is, be they Mexico-American, American-Mexican, American-American or Mexican-Mexican, is quite simply full of it, full of it. Sit down, Alan.

We have to confront this problem right now, because the Rubicon Grande has obviously been crossed. I realized that when I heard there's now a copy of the national anthem sung completely in Spanish. Although, truth be told, I've kind of been doing it a little bit myself over the years. Because I don't know about you, but I always start the song off "Jose can you see?"

Now I place a lot of the blame on our two presidents. I don't like Fox. The president, not the network. Love the network. I love Roger Ailes. Love, love, love, love, love, love, but Vicente Fox always reminds me of Nile Wagner in his Zorro sketch.

And you know something? If he's proud of his country as he says he is, maybe he should try to honcho his economy out of the permanent state of siesta it's in so its people can stay home and make a buck or 60 trillion pesos, whatever today's conversion rate may be.

And while I truly admire President Bush, I just don't get him at all on illegal immigration. I sometimes think that his soft approach to this problem might possibly have something to do with the reflexive guilt he might feel about his patrician upbringing.

I believe as he made the long mosey from Yale to y'all, he found himself touched by people who don't take the gift of America for granted. Well, that's fine, sir. But you have to realize that right about now 80 percent of this country has reached the same point with illegal immigration that you did after Saddam Hussein lined his bird cage with that 17th U.N. resolution on Iraq. Enough is enough.

And so I present my Mexican/American lifeboat theory. It's quite simple. If you really want everybody coming here unchecked, just give up your seat in the boat. One illegal immigrant in, one proponent of illegal immigration out.

Hey, if you're going to talk the "come on up" talk, you've got to walk the "head down south" walk.

Back to you, Holmes and Watson.

COLMES: Has me defending Bush.

HANNITY: OK, Inspector Clouseau. I'll tell you, Inspector Clouseau- Miller.

Let's Say I Break Into Your House

A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials in ages!! It explains things better than all the baloney you hear on TV.
Recently large demonstrations have taken place across the country protesting the fact that Congress is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration. Certain people are angry that the US might protect its own borders, might make it harder to sneak into this country and, once here, to stay indefinitely. Let me see if I correctly understand the thinking behind these protests.

Let's say I break into your house. Let's say that when you discover me in your house, you insist that I leave. But I say, "I've made all the beds and washed the dishes and did the laundry and swept the floors; I've done all the things you don't like to do. I'm hard-working and honest (except for when I broke into your house).
According to the protesters, not only must you let me stay, you must add me to your family's insurance plan, educate my kids, and provide other benefits to me and to my family (my husband will do your yard work because he too is hard-working and honest, except for that breaking in part). If you try to call the police or force me out, I will call my friends who will picket your house carrying signs that proclaim my right to be there.
It's only fair, after all, because you have a nicer house than I do, and I'm just trying to better myself. I'm hard-working and honest, um, except for well, you know.
And what a deal it is for me!! I live in your house, contributing only a fraction of the cost of my keep, and there is nothing you can do about it without being accused of selfishness, prejudice and being an anti-housebreaker. Oh yeah, and I want you to learn my language so you can communicate with me
Why can't people see how ridiculous this is?! Only in America....if you agree, pass it on (in English). Share it if you see the value of it as a good simile. If not blow it off along with your future Social Security funds.

Two men killed outside Loxahatchee party - Correction of the news story

Current mood: Angry
Category: News and Politics

The Palm Beach Post reported this article in the Newspaper and online on Saturday August 26, 2006.  As brother to the home owner referred to in this article I would like make corrections to statements in this article in order to expose the true facts in this incident.  Please see the corrections following this copy of the article.

Two men killed outside Loxahatchee party

By Susan Spencer-Wendel
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Saturday, August 26, 2006

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating a double homicide in Loxahatchee that occurred last night.

Two men died at the scene after a shooting outside a keg party attended by 30 to 35 young adults at 18727 Orange Grove Blvd., said a sheriff's office spokesman.

The victims were identified as Stephen Bunting, 20, and John Lott, 19, both of Loxahatchee.   Authorities said the shooting suspect fired at the men outside the party.

They got the call at 11:07 P.M.

Detectives have identified the suspect but said no further information is available.

___________________________________________________

This article is incorrect, inaccurate and misleading.  It also fails to mention many facts about the incident.  The following are factual corrections provided by the people (my relatives) that live at the house and were there at the time this event occurred.

1.  There was no keg party at all.  This is a complete fabrication.  The only thing that was occurring at the house at the time was that Derek Hewitt  (the eldest son) was having 7 or 8 friends over.  It is my understanding that it was the birthday of one of his male friends and that was the purpose of this get together.  There was no actual party.  No birthday party, no keg party, no celebration of any kind.  Once again this was a fabrication by the Palm Beach Post or by someone giving them that information.

2.  The reported 30 to 35 people mentioned in the article are not in anyway known to the Hewitt's, the residents at the mentioned address.  The 30 to 35 people that are mentioned were not invited to this house by the residents; they were not in the house of the residence.  They were not welcome on the property, they were trespassing and had been told twice by the head of the Hewitt's household (Rory Hewitt) that they had to leave and could not hang around their property.  The first time they were simply told, "You cannot hang around here; you are going to have to leave".  The second time, when they had not yet left, they were again told, "You cannot stay around my property, you have to leave and if you don't leave I am going to call the cops."  It was after Rory returned to the house that this armed altercation took place among people in this group of 30 to 35 people.  The Hewitt's had no part in this incident other than the fact that these people were trespassing on their property.

3.  It is well known among the residence of this area of Loxahatchee, FL that people use these dirt access roads located around the neighborhoods to take shortcuts when walking from block to block.

Access-road2 To elaborate, this residential area was formerly orange groves and agricultural.  The residential blocks are longer than an average residential block and travel from East to West.  There are many remaining drainage/irrigation canals that run perpendicular to each block and divide these blocks in half.  Along these canals are unpaved access roads/foot trails.  Many people use theses access roads along the canals to avoid having to walk to the end of the block in order to go from street to street.  The Hewitt's home just happens to be next to one of these canals.  This group of people had congregated next to the canal along this access road along Hewitt's property.  This group of people, again, was not invited there; they chose to congregate at this location at their own will.  The Hewitt's did what they were supposed to do.  They asked them to leave, and then they warned them to leave once again or else they would call the authorities.

4.  The article fails to mention that Derek Hewitt went to the two wounded victims after the gunshots were heard and attempted to place a towel on the wounds and apply pressure, he also tried to give CPR.  At least one of these young men was still alive and breathing.  When the police finally came, they ordered Derek Hewitt to get away from the young man he was trying help.  The police did not follow with any attempts of their own to help the young man, saying only, We cannot help him, we are not paramedics.  The fire department was the second to arrive; they also did not assist or help the young man.  The last to arrive was the paramedics, who had taken the longest to arrive because they had made a wrong turn.  The young man had already passed by the time the paramedics arrived.  None of these emergency personnel demonstrated any urgency in attending to the victims.  None of this information was expressed in the news article or in another news forum that I have witnessed.

5.  It has recently come to my attention that the city, state, or police intend to file charges against the Hewitt's claiming that there was a MySpace.com account that had invited people to their address for a keg party and to my understanding is the primary reason that they have arrived at the assumption that there was a keg party taking place.  Now, this invitation (if it exists), did not come from anyone at the Hewitt's residence.  There was no invitation made by any of the Hewitt's, especially as there was no party taking place.  If there is or was an invitation made by someone on MySpace.com, it would have been from another outside party.  It would be completely out of the Hewitt's control if someone other then they were to invite people to meet next to their house.  On the other hand, if the local authorities had attended to the many complaints that have been made over the years about the people traversing the properties of the many residents in the area, perhaps they would have been able to prevent these incidents.  If the area was properly patrolled, not neglected, and the residents complaints about people walking through their properties over the years was answered, they could have prevented this many people from congregating in any given area in the first place.  Now they have the nerve to propose filing charges against the Hewitt's simply because these people chose to congregate next to their property.  It could have been on anyone's property along these access roads.

6.  I also heard from another relative that another Newspaper, I believe it was the Sun Sentinel, claimed to quote Rory Hewitt of saying that, His son allowed his party to get out of control.  This is also a complete fabrication.  They have taken a statement referring to the get together with his 8 friends inside the house and twisted the statements to imply that the group of 30 to 35 that congregated along the property was of one in the same. And since there was no party of any kind at the residence, that part was a flat out lie.  They also quoted Rory as having said that he was unaware of a keg at the party.  Once again, there was no party, another blatant fabrication.  If there was a keg, then the reason he would be unaware of it would be because they had nothing to do with the people that had congregated outside their home along the access road.

Once again it is obvious that the news media is more interested in sensationalizing then telling the facts and sprinkling embellishment along the way.  Don't believe everything you read and hear in the media.  They seldom tell the true facts.

I wrote this blog in defense of my family, since the government officials involved seem to want to play bureaucracy and take the easy way out instead of placing the responsibility were it belongs, the trespassers and the gunman.

___________________________________________________

The short version of the true chronology of events is as follows:

Derek Hewitt had 8 friends over to hang out as it was one of their birthdays.  During the course of the evening, Derek had noticed a large group of young men had been gradually building along the access road next to their property and told his father about it.  Derek's father, Rory, went out side and told them that they could not hang out there and would have to leave and went back inside.  When they still had not left after some time, Rory again went outside and told them that if they didn't leave he would call the cops.  A short time after returning to the house, two gunshots were heard.  The Hewitt's found that there were two gunshot victims on their property.  They called 911 and reported the incident, Derek attempted to give aide to at least one gunshot victim by means of pressure with at towel to the gunshot wound and CPR.  When the police arrived, Derek was instructed to leave the victim alone, which probably exacerbated the situation and ultimately abandoned this young man to die due to the late arrival of the paramedics and the refusal of the police or fire department to go to the young mans aid.

This was the extent of the Hewitt's involvement

Moose (the dog) passed away recently

Moose Moose,  The dog that played Eddie on Frasier passed away recently on June 22, 2006.

He was 16 years old.  That is 112 years old in dog years.  He was born in Florida in 1990 and began his acting career on Frasier in 1992.

I know that he gave me plenty of laughs and was always my favorite animal actor as many people know that I had used him as my MSN Messenger Avatar (photo) for quite some time.

THE BEST ACTOR IN HOLLYWOOD TODAY?

THEY ARE REHEARSING THE MUFFIN SCENE FOR THE PREMIERE EPISODE OF FRASIER'S eighth season. Daphne (Jane Leeves) makes the muffin; Frasier (Kelsey Grammar) inquires into the muffin's properties; Martin (John Mahoney) masticates the muffin; and Eddie (Moose) -- the master, the genius, the star, whose world-famous range as an actor has made Frasier the most sophisticated television show of all time -- sits in the armchair and stares at the muffin. He stares at it with such electrifying, passionate intensity that if the scene ran any longer, dogs watching at home would have to trot out to the backyard for a cigarette.
Standing just off-camera, behind Moose's chain is his beautiful French companion, Mathilde DeCagny. She wears a bag of treats around her waist. It is rumored that he sleeps with her from time to time, she bends and whispers in Moose's ear. Twice she swoops down and kisses him on his fanny.
When the director calls for the next scene, the rest of the cast rapidly disperses, chatting and laughing. Grammar walks to the piano, seats himself and begins a sonata. Moose, however, like Jim Carrey making the Andy Kaufman movie, remains completely in character.

LIKE OTHER GREAT figures before him, he was born in a barn. Tag, a celebrated and brilliant beauty, gave birth to him on December 24,1990, in Weirsdale, Florida. He was the fourth and last puppy of the litter, the largest, so he was named Moose.

He was difficult, if you please, from the age of 8 weeks.

After annihilating the house of his first owners, Connie and Sam Thise, Moose was given to a blacksmith. At the blacksmith's, he managed to turn the horses loose, start a fire and run off the family's beloved cat, all in less than 64 hours. He was returned to the Thises, who bred dogs to hunt in competitions. ("Like I was going to spend my life doing that," says Moose in his hilarious autobiography, My Life as a Dog, written with Brian Hargrove and out this Christmas in a special edition) Here is a partial list of what the future star did to celebrate his return home:

Destroyed the couch.

Severely gnawed the legs of the dining room table.

Ate the telephone wires.

Vomited on the stereo speakers.

Urinated on Sam Thise's favorite chair.

Terrorized Tommy, the Thises' horse, by jumping up, biting his tail and swinging back and forth on it.

Dug a hole through the wall of the upstairs bathroom.

We'll pass over in silence his antics with the neighborhood cats.

IN THE BLOOD: Moose's son Enzo, with costar Frankie Muniz, in the film My Dog Skip.IN THE BLOOD: Moose's son Enzo, with costar Frankie Muniz, in the film My Dog Skip.

Just minutes before the Thise family went mad, fate intervened. A trainer by the name of Cathy Morrison, who worked for Birds and Animals Unlimited, a talent agency for animals, happened to stop in the veterinarian office where Connie Thise worked. By a stroke of luck, Moose was there too. One glance at the irresistibly charming little rascal and Morrison fell under his spell.

She trained him in Orlando, Florida, where she worked with the Animal Actors Showcase at Universal Studios, then sent him to Los Angeles to audition for Frasier.

Technically, Birds and Animals Unlimited still owns Moose. But he lives with the firm's number-one trainer, the shapely Mathilde DeCagny, in Santa Monica, California.

"He needed to have some kind of job," says DeCagny; who is well-known for finding dogs at pounds and turning them into actors, "something to keep him stimulated in his mind. He has so much energy, so much charisma!"

"Who has more charisma?" I ask "Kelsey Grammar or Moose?"

DeCagny smiles. She speaks like Catherine Deneuve and has the slightly bucked overbite of Rosanna Arquette -- an inhumanly sexy combination. "Kelsey is just the greatest actor," she says.

"But who is the better actor? Kelsey Grammar or Moose?"

DeCagny looks down at Moose, who is scratching both ears at the same time and snorting with the sound of a tractor exhaust. "This guy just has a personality that you can't compete with," she says.

MOOSE MOVED IN WITH DECAGNY after the Frasier audition. "The truth is, the producers were having a terrible time casting the role of Eddie," she says. "They had seen nearly every dog in L.A. Then Moose flew in from Florida, trotted out with a group of seven other dogs, they went down the line, stopped at him and said, 'That's it.'"

He began leading the life of a star -- riding horseback with DeCagny, running by the sea (Jane Leeves has given him the keys to her beach house), flying first class, appearing at charity events and thrilling tour groups on the Paramount lot by permitting himself to be fondled amid the bulbs and bushes of Lucille Ball Park. But he has never stopped being Moose.

"One day. I'd given him a bath and put him in the yard to dry," says DeCagny. "I have a pepper tree, and Moose managed to actually climb up this tree, get on the roof of the dog kennel, jump down into the neighbor's yard and get out!"

Moose enjoys hearing this story so much, he rolls on top of his own head and grins up at DeCagny in his celebrated Kelsey Grammar imitation. It's a perfect impression in every way, except that Moose possesses no teeth, having chewed them off on plaster, rubber, wood, marble, vinyl, masonite, beaverboard, slate and cat dolls.

By the time DeCagny discovered his escape from her yard, he'd been gone a good hour or so. "And I went calling 'Moose! Moose! Moose! Moose! Moose!' No Moose. My heart was beating really, really hard. But I said to myself 'Now, let's see. I'm Moose. I'm free. What am I gonna do?' So first I went around the neighborhood looking for cats or another dog to beat up on. I mean, Moose is going to go look for trouble. For something he can fight, kill and eat."

Moose, like every other leading man in Hollywood, is genuinely moved by the tales of his own machismo, so much so that he has hoisted up his left haunch and surrendered himself to an ecstatic, eyes-rolled-up-in-his-head session of ball-licking.

"But nothing!" says DeCagny. "I couldn't find him. So I went down by the beach. Nothing. I went back up around the house. My heart was beating so fast. I took my car, and my husband took his car, and we drove around. And nothing! I telephoned friends and had some fliers made up. I went to the shelter. I went everywhere. I picked up the fliers and started pinning them up. The fliers said LOST! BROWN AND WHITE JACK RUSSELL. REWARD."

(Speaking of rewards, despite interviews with the wealthy actor's inner circle, I could not discover how much money Moose makes per episode. When I threw out a frustrated guess of $25,000 per show, DeCagny snorted and said "It's probably more like $2,500.")

"So there's a pet store that we go to, and it's also a grooming place," says DeCagny. "I went there to give them a flier, and I walk in and say to the lady, 'I lost Moose!' And she goes 'Oh, my God! You did, really?' And I say, 'Yes.' And she says, 'Well, hang on one second' And meanwhile, there are people in the store, and they're buying stuff toys and this and that. And a moment later, the lady comes out with Moose, with soap suds on his head from getting a bath!

"Those people had picked him up, in the street, and he had rolled in dogs---, the stinker. They were going to take him home. And when I told them who he was, they went 'My God! You gotta be kidding!' And this one" DeCagny points to the toothless but totally unabashed little thespian - "acted like he'd never seen me before!"

Just like Sir John Gielgud in Hamlet. "He was looking like 'what are you doing here? I thought I got rid of you!' And I'm in tears, of course. And the people are kind of in tears. And the lady is in tears. She didn't know it was Moose. He didn't have his collar on because I had just given him a bath."

"And I burst into tears," says Moose in his book, 'because I got suds in my eyes."

SMART PET TRICKS: "He's thinking all the time," says his trainer. "It's scary for me."

MOOSE'S PICTURE IS BEING TAKEN ON the Frasier set. While lights are being adjusted, DeCagny notices that she has left the star's toys in his trailer. She hands me the leash, which is clipped to Moose's leather collar, and, after instructing me to remain with him on the set, she delivers three caveats:

"Don't let him eat anything!" she says. "Don't go into the trash! And nothing off the floor!"

"Don't worry!" I say. "Go on! Ta-ta!" I smile as she walks away. She halts and looks back doubtfully.

"Go on!" I say again. I glance down at Moose and shrug. He weighs all of what -24 pounds? He's smarter than I am, but I'm bigger.

The very instant DeCagny disappears around the corner, my arm is yanked almost out of its socket, and my body is dragged across Frasier's living room, through his kitchen, around the coffeehouse set and straight into the trash cans at a speed of maybe 15 miles an hour. Moose manages to knock down one of the cans - a big 55-gallon job - with such force, the contents nearly fly out the back door.

"Come to Mama," I say, bending aver and swooping him up in my arms.

"Is he giving you any trouble?" asks a female voice behind me. I whirl around.

Mimi the Eager Publicist.

"If I kidnapped Moose," I say, smiling, "how much would Paramount pay to get him back?"

Mimi sags sideways. This is the kind of question no publicist wants to deal with, but she gamely mumbles

something about "millions."

"Would they pay more for Moose than for Kelsey?"

"Oh!" She almost chokes. "I don't..."

"We all know Moose is worth more than Pen Gilpin," I say. "That's a given. But what about Kelsey?"

She doesn't answer.

DIDN'T YOU PHOTOGRAPH KELSEY Grammar this weekend for In Style?" I ask Art Streiber. He is down on all fours, crawling around on the cold cement, setting up a shot of Moose.

"I photographed him, yeah," says Streiber.

"Which was more difficult, Moose or Kelsey?"

Streiber stops what he is doing. Moose, who is lying on his

back with all four paws in the air, turns, looks at Streiber and lets out a low, comical howl.

"This is more difficult," says Streiber.

"Why?"

"Because we're asking the dog to do really difficult things. Hold positions. And with a human, I want him to move, interact, gesticulate. The dog I wanted to hold a pose. And he's trained better than any dog I've ever seen, but it's still hard."

As a matter of fact, the photo session is startling. From the first moment Moose walks out and takes his mark, he delivers an extraordinary performance - mugging, rolling, pawing, smiling, jumping, etc., etc. Now, of course, Moose is DeCagny's stooge. After all, she can control him with a series of hand signals. And nobody expects any actor to invent things on his own. But still. The sheer force of Moose's personality, his outrageous exuberance, his undeniable cheek (DeCagny had to train him to endure being petted) and his gorgeous sadness (the charisma everyone talks about comes from an unmistakable look of longing in his eyes), all these things add up to an audacity that just blows people away.

"He's supersmart," DeCagny says. "It's scary for me because I don't know what to expect. I have many dogs that perform in movies. And we are in harmony. But with Moose, it's not that there isn't any harmony. It's just that he's constantly keeping me guessing. So I have to keep him guessing."

She suggests that people who are training their pets at home should "not necessarily go with treats all the time. What you can do is try to switch -- one time you have a treat, two times you don't have a treat. One time you go to a toy, one time you've got nothing."

"You have no trouble with men, do you, Mathilde?" I ask.

She shakes her head. "No. Never had."

"You know why?" I say.

She smiles. She is so French, her corn-flower-blue bra matches her cornflower-blue T-shirt.

"Because," I say, "you understand how to train the bastards!"

"It's psychology," she allows. "Yes," I say. "You offer treats and praise."

"And I cook," she says and gives me a beat of her lashes.

M00SE EXITS THE PARAMOUNT lot riding shotgun in DeCagny's big blue van. His pretty friend Tulsa (a whippet mix DeCagny rescued from a pound and is now training to be an actor) is with him.

They are headed home, where Moose will run about in the garden to his heart's content. But first they must stop at a pet store and buy two pooperscoopers. Both Tulsa and Moose caper up and down the aisles, sampling lamb-links and playing with toys. When it comes time to pay, DeCagny is chatting with the cashier, and by God if the best-trained dog in America doesn't lift his leg and pee on a column.

Tulsa steps back and eyes the puddle in happy astonishment.

My own joy on the occasion is immense. I have been struggling for years to train my dogs merely to sit on command -- and here is Moose, the coolest, smartest dog of his generation, urinating on a pole in a pet store! It gives me such hope! (And I'm sure Moose feels good about it, too.) By the way, if you want a small dog for your apartment, DeCagny advises, get a bulldog -- a toy poodle, a dachshund or, better yet, a mutt from the pound. She says if you are thinking of getting a Jack Russell, don't.

A Strong Voice from the Past

(The validity of the claim that President Theodore Roosevelt had ever made the following statements has long been in dispute and denied.  Nonetheless, the statements are valid regardless of from where they originated.  I am posting this anyway.)

Theodore Roosevelt's Ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, birthplace, or origin.  But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American.  There can be no divided allegiance here.  Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all!  We have room for but one flag, the American flag!  We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language! And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people!"

George Carlin on New Orleans & Katrina

“George Carlin on New Orleans”

carlin Been sitting here with my ass in a wad, wanting to speak out about the bullshit going on in New Orleans. For the people of New Orleans…

First I would like to say, Sorry for your loss. With that said, let’s go through a few hurricane rules: (Unlike an earthquake, we know it’s coming)

  1. A mandatory evacuation means just that…Get the hell out. Don’t blame the Government after they tell you to go. If they hadn’t said anything, I can see the argument. They said get out… if you didn’t; it’s your fault, not theirs. (I don’t want to hear it, even if you don’t have a car, you can get out.)
  2. If there is an emergency, stock up on water and non-perishables. If you didn’t do this, it’s not the Governments fault you’re starving.
    • If you run out of food and water, find a store that has some. (Remember, shoes, TV’s, DVD’s, and CD’s are not edible. Leave them alone)
    • If the local store has been looted of food or water, leave your neighbor’s TV and stereo alone. (See #2a) They worked hard to get their stuff. Just because they were smart enough to leave during a mandatory evacuation, doesn’t give you the right to take their stuff…it’s theirs, not yours.
    • If someone comes in to help you, don’t shoot at them and then complain no one is helping you. I’m not getting shot to help save some dumb ass who didn’t leave when told to do so.
    • If you are in your house that is completely underwater, your belongings are probably too far gone for anyone to want them. If someone does want them, let them have them and hopefully they’ll die in the filth. Just leave! (It’s New Orleans, find a voodoo warrior and put a curse on them)
    • My tax money should not pay to rebuild a 2 million dollar house, a sports stadium or a floating casino. Also, my tax money shouldn’t go to rebuild a city that is under sea level. You wouldn’t build your house on quicksand would you? You want to live below sea-level, do your country some good and join the Navy.
    • Regardless of what the Poverty Pimps Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton want you to believe, The US Government didn’t create the hurricane as a way to eradicate the black people of New Orleans; (Neither did Russia as a way to destroy America). The US Government didn’t cause global warming that caused the hurricane (We’ve been coming out of an ice age for over a million years).
    • The government isn’t responsible for giving you anything. This is the land of the free and the home of the brave, but you gotta work for what you want. McDonalds and Wal-Mart are always hiring, get a damn job and stop spooning off the people who are actually working for a living. President Kennedy said it best…”Ask not what your county can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Thank you for allowing me to rant.
